Meeting Demands in an Evolving Technological Landscape
As technology progresses at a rapid pace, electronic devices are continuously pushed to their limits. This evolution demands higher speeds and smaller sizes, resulting in faster operation but also generating more heat. Managing this increased heat within limited space presents even greater challenges.
Mobile phones, electric vehicles, drones, personal computers, medical equipment, video monitors, game consoles; pretty much all technology is being affected. Each device is required to provide reliable, optimal performance at all times – while managing large amounts of heat as a byproduct.
The End of Moore’s Law?
With the increasing number of components in an ever-shrinking footprint, manufacturers are facing what seem to be insurmountable challenges. One of those challenges is cooling these components in very tight spaces. The solution would need to be wafer-thin, featherweight, and exhibit far superior thermal conductivity over conventional thermal interface materials.
Manufactures are constantly testing the limits of processing power and features that lead to the increased production of heat. Sometimes those limits are pushed too far and performance or product life suffers.
We’re all familiar with our smartphone getting hot during extended periods of use. This heat buildup can cause it to overheat and shut down, or worse to spark and catch fire.
Heat accelerates chemical reactions within the battery, leading to increased self-discharge and reduced performance, and decreased energy storage capacity. Constant overheating devices can lead to internal components degrading faster, adversely affect battery life, and any other internal component essential to the device’s function.
Total Recall
In 2024, Best Buy recalled over 287,000 air fryers due to overheating causing parts to melt or shatter posing fire and laceration risks.
Phillips recalled nearly 13,000 baby monitors last August due to risks related to overheating batteries.
More than 1.5 million dehumidifiers were recalled due to overheating. The models were manufactured by Gree Electric Appliances inc, who develop for brands such as Kenmore, GE, SoleusAir, Norpole and Seabreeze.
May 2022, Tesla recalled nearly 130,000 vehicles due to overheating infotainment system.
- Discovered in 2004 by Prof Andre Geim and Prof Kostya Novoselov at The University of Manchester.
- It is not only incredibly strong (over 100 times stronger than steel), but also highly flexible and lightweight.
- Graphene is 1 million times thinner than a human hair. It is the thinnest material on earth, so thin that it is two dimensional.
- Its electrical and thermal conductivity are unparalleled, making it a game-changer in various applications, especially in thermal management.
Graphene can efficiently transfer heat at rates surpassing those of traditional materials like copper and aluminum while maintaining a minimal footprint. This property makes graphene an ideal candidate for use in heat sinks and thermal interface materials (TIMs), capable of a thermal conductivity in the X axis of 600 W/m-K and 70-130 W/m-K across the Z axis.
Graphene exhibits remarkable thermal stability, even at elevated temperatures. This stability makes it suitable for use in demanding environments where conventional materials may degrade or fail.

Thermal Management in Circuit Boards and Electronics
Thermal interface materials are vital in managing heat on circuit boards, bridging the gap between heat-generating components like CPUs and heat sinks to enhance thermal conduction.
This efficient heat transfer is crucial as today’s compact, high-performance electronics generate considerable heat. Without proper dissipation, heat can cause overheating, efficiency loss, and damage.
TIMs ensure devices maintain safe operating temperatures, boosting performance and longevity. Acknowledging these thermal challenges, Leader Tech has advanced with graphene based TIMs, aligning with trends in device miniaturization and offering effective heat management solutions for modern electronics.
Graphene in Action – Applications in the Electronics Industry
Graphene’s versatility allows it to be used in various electronic devices, from smartphones and laptops to high-performance servers and aerospace components. Its superior thermal conductivity ensures that devices remain cool and perform at optimal levels.
For instance, in high-performance computing systems, graphene’s ability to quickly dissipate heat is crucial for maintaining the efficiency of processors and memory modules.
With a density ranging from 0.6 to 1.0 gram per cubic centimeter (g/cm³), which is remarkably low compared to standard thermal interface material (2.0 to 3.0 grams per cubic centimeter (g/cm³), its minimal thickness allows for the creation of ultra-thin and lightweight thermal management solutions that are crucial in modern electronics.
Designing with Graphene – A New Frontier for Engineers and Product Designers
For engineers and designers, graphene offers a new realm of possibilities. Its thinness and flexibility enable it to be integrated into designs where traditional materials might not fit. This adaptability is invaluable in the era of wearable technology and IoT (Internet of Things) devices, where space is at a premium. However, integrating graphene into existing designs is not without its challenges. Leader Tech is tackling these head-on, offering solutions that are both innovative and practical for widespread adoption.
Embracing Sustainability – The Environmental Edge of Graphene
In addition to its technical advantages, Graphene is also environmentally friendly. It offers a sustainable alternative to traditional materials, which are often resource-intensive and less eco-friendly. Leader Tech’s commitment to sustainability is evident in its choice of graphene, aligning with global efforts to reduce environmental footprints in manufacturing and product design.
