Low frequency magnetic fields are especially dangerous for electronic devices. Why? They fill the environment with unwanted current flows and upset the balance of a carefully designed electrical circuit by creating noise and triggering other errors. In regards to consumer electronics like cell phones, these disturbances may result in poor communication and lost data. However, in some other sectors, the effects of magnetic fields can be quite devastating. For instance, if automotive electronics are not shielded properly, the systems equipped with magnetic sensors may malfunction and lead to fatal consequences.
When it comes to shielding low frequency magnetic fields, one should keep in mind that such fields cannot be blocked or insulated, but can only be redirected. To make this happen, designers need to use the right shielding material.
Different types of nickel-iron alloys are widely used for magnetic shielding. Each variety uses these two metals in varying proportions. The shielding efficiency of any composite material depends on its metal ratio. For example, an alloy which has less than 50 percent Nickel (Ni) can attain magnetic permeability levels of a few thousand. On the other hand, those alloys having a higher nickel content may reach a permeability level which is equivalent to tens of thousands. Permalloy or HyMu 80 is an excellent example of a high-permeability alloy.
To add custom attributes to their magnetic shielding solutions, engineers tweak the metal ratio to their advantage. For example, when it comes to shielding strong magnetic fields, engineers generally use a multilayered enclosure with the outer part made of high ferrous (Fe) material and the inside part made of high nickel material. Such a structure can utilize the high saturation features of the iron and the high magnetic permeability of the nickel for attenuating a strong magnetic field.
Commercial Ni-Fe alloys undergo a final annealing process to keep their grain structure intact and to optimize their permeability. These materials are also corrosion resistant and suitable for use with enclosures of any shape.
The use of electronics is on the rise, and so are the magnetic energies in the environment. Consequently, shielding sensitive electronics from low frequency magnetic fields has become more crucial than ever. Experiments with different combinations of metals have given rise to new and innovative alloys with varying attenuation capabilities.
