The Faraday Cage: A Breakthrough in Shielding

In 1836, Faraday demonstrated that an enclosure made of conductive material could block external electric fields. He proved this by lining a room with metal foil and using an electrostatic generator to charge the outside of the room. Astonishingly, when he entered the room with an electroscope, the device detected no electrical charge inside. This experiment illustrated that electric fields cannot penetrate conductive enclosures, a principle that became known as the Faraday cage.

Today, Faraday cages are essential in many industries. They protect sensitive equipment from EMI, ensuring that external electromagnetic waves do not interfere with the operation of critical devices.
