What are typical lead times for CBS shields?
Lead times vary from 3 – 8 business days ARO to ship, depending on the quantity being ordered.

What materials are offered for CBS shields?
CBS shields are offered in .015” thick pre-tin plated steel, Alloy 770, or pre-tin plated phosphorus bronze materials.

What retention mechanism is used for CBS shields?
CBS shields utilize retention fingers on the fences to retain the covers in place. For added retention, dimples are also available for 40-CBS, 50-CBS, & 80-CBS series shields.

Are there any design limitations for CBS shields?
Yes, the length & width of all CBS shields must be in 1/4” increments due to the pitch of the fingers on the fence. Custom or modified CBS designs are very limited in nature, and Slot-Lok shields should be considered for custom shielding applications.

Are CBS shields suitable for automated placement on a PCB?
No, CBS shields are not recommended for high volume automated applications. Refer to SMS or Slot-Lok shields for suitable options.

Are there any NRE charges for CBS shield designs?
No

What are typical lead times for Slot-Lok shields?
Lead times will vary based on the complexity of the shield. As a general guideline for planning purposes, 2 weeks ARO to ship is common for a standard design, whereas 3-4 weeks is typical for a more complex shield design.

What materials are offered for Slot-Lok shields?
Slot-Lok shields can be customized to use any material, however standard stocked materials include .008”, .010”, .012”, .015”, & .020” thick pre-tin plated steel & Alloy 770.

What retention mechanism is used for Slot-Lok shields?
Slot-Lok shields utilize slots & dimples, and come standard with .400” spacing. Custom dimple/slot spacing is available upon request.

Are Slot-Lok shields suitable for automated placement on a PCB?
Yes, Slot-Lok shields are designed with a pick spot for automated placement onto a PCB. Special packaging such as Tape & Reel or Tray packaging does not come standard & is available upon request.

Are there any NRE charges for Slot-Lok shield designs?
Typically no, however more complex shields with special requirements or those using custom materials may require an NRE charge for any applicable tooling, etch artwork fees, etc. For production shields, tooling NRE’s are generally offered as an option to reduce lead times & provide more competitive part pricing.

Are there any design limitations for Slot-Lok shields?
Typically no, as Slot-Lok shields are fully customizable & can be specially designed to function in almost any application.

What materials are offered for SMS shields?
SMS shields come standard in matte pre-tin plated steel, and are also offered in Alloy 770 (when ordering Alloy 770, add –N to the end of the SMS P/N).

Do the SMS shields come standard with ventilation holes?
SMS-1XX series: 1-piece shields with ventilation holes
SMS-3XX series: 1-piece shields without ventilation holes
SMS-2XX series: 2-piece shields (frame & cover) with ventilation holes on the cover
SMS-4XX series: 2-piece shields (frame & cover) without ventilation holes on the cover

Are the SMS shields suitable for automated placement on a PCB?
Yes, the one-piece SMS shields (SMS-1XX & SMS-3XX series) and the frames of two-piece SMS shields (SMS-2XXF & SMS-4XXF series) are delivered in tape & reel packaging & are designed with a pick spot for automated placement onto a PCB.

Can SMS shields be modified?
SMS shields are fully tooled standard shields & the designs are fixed. If modification is required, the part will be quoted as a new custom Slot-Lok design with any applicable NRE/tooling charges.

Tech Clips: .147”
Mini Tech Clips: .061”

Are the Tech Clips & Mini Tech Clips suitable for automated placement on a PCB?
Yes, these products are delivered in tape & reel packaging & are designed with a pick spot for automated placement onto a PCB.

How many Tech Clips or Mini Tech Clips are needed to secure a shield in place?
This will vary based on the application & any special shock/vibration requirements, and will need to be tested on an individual basis. However as a general rule of thumb, at a bare minimum there should be one Tech Clip or Mini Tech Clip for every 0.75” of shield side wall to ensure adequate cover retention (e.g. a 1” x 1” shield would have 4 total clips, with 1 clip on each side, whereas a 1” x 1.5” shield would have 6 total clips, with 1 clip on 2x sides & 2 clips on 2x sides).

Will the gaps between clips affect the shielding effectiveness of the shield?
This will depend on the targeted frequency range to be attenuated. At lower frequencies (<500 MHz) there will be a negligible impact, however at higher frequencies (>500 MHz) the clips will need to be strategically placed to optimize shielding effectiveness. For higher frequency applications, it is recommended to add recesses on the bottom of the shield walls where it mates with the clips, such that the shield sits flush on the PCB around the perimeter.
